Saint Paul de Vence, Cote d'Azur, France

The supremely picturesque hilltop village south of Vence is home to many prominent artists and writers. Aside from Vence’s old-village aesthetics and splendid views, the town is famous for the nearby Fondation Maeght, an art museum and exhibition centre opened in 1964 that houses one of the most important collections of paintings, sculpture and graphic drawings in Europe. Set on a hill in the beautiful Provencal countryside within gardens peppered with sculptures and fountains, the foundation also organises concerts and other performances and we highly recommend a visit. The museum is open every day and tickets are €14.

If you want to stay in Saint Paul de Vence, you’ll have to book well ahead, especially if you want to stay in the celebrated Colombe d’Or hotel (Place du General de Gaulle, 06570 St-Paul-de-Vence, France). The works of world-famous artists adorn the walls of this three-star hotel and it’s possible to share a room with a Picasso! Described as rustic-chic, it’s the restaurant that you’ll really want to write home about; the food, service and stunning views attract writers and celebrities from around the world.
