Plan Your Ski Trip

January and February usually bring the best snow, but they’re also the busiest weeks, especially school holidays. For quieter slopes and better prices, look at early January or March, and pick a high resort if you’re going early or late in the season.

Most of the French Alps is within two to three hours of Geneva, Lyon, Grenoble or Chambéry. Or skip the airport entirely: the Travelski Night Express sleeper train runs from London to the Tarentaise overnight. If you’re driving, hire a car with winter tyres and carry chains.

Ski the Legendary Vallée Blanche

The Vallée Blanche is considered by some to be the ultimate ski descent. If you’re a confident intermediate skier visiting Chamonix, this run is a must. It has everything: it’s thrilling, the views are breathtaking, it’s difficult but doable, and even though you’re only a cable car ride from Chamonix’s centre, you get the sense of being on an epic backcountry trip.

Hiking in France

France has some of the best long-distance hiking in Europe. Over 180,000 km of marked trails — the famous GR network — criss-cross the country, from the granite peaks of the Alps to the coastal paths of Provence and the volcanic landscapes of the Massif Central.
The French Alps are the headline act. The Tour du Mont Blanc circles Europe’s highest peak through three countries over 10–12 days. The Tour des Écrins (GR54) is arguably the finest alpine circuit most people haven’t heard of. And the Tour du Queyras (GR58) offers wild, crowd-free trekking through France’s most remote national park.
Further south, the Gorges du Verdon delivers dramatic canyon hiking, while the Pyrenees rival the Alps for scale with a fraction of the foot traffic.

French Alps MTB

The French Alps is the mountain biking capital of Europe. Massive lift-accessed bike parks, thousands of kilometres of marked singletrack, and a trail-building culture that’s years ahead of anywhere else on the continent.
The Portes du Soleil is the world’s largest mountain biking area — 600 km of trails across 12 resorts, including Morzine and Les Gets. Alpe d’Huez has some of the most technically demanding enduro trails in the Alps. Chamonix combines high-altitude backcountry riding with the most spectacular mountain scenery in France.

Adventure Activities in France

France has a lot more going on than just hiking, biking and skiing. The same mountains, gorges, and rivers that make the landscape so spectacular also make it one of Europe’s best destinations for adventure sports.
Go canyoning in the coastal canyons of Provence, whitewater rafting on the Ubaye and Verdon rivers, or rock climbing on the world-class limestone of Buoux and Céüse. Via ferrata routes in the French Alps and the south offer exposed mountain terrain without full climbing experience, and paragliding tandem flights launch from iconic sites across the Alps and the Mediterranean coast.

Provence

With mountains, rivers and the Mediterranean sea, Provence is a haven for outdoor sports enthusiasts. From the exhilarating rock climbing routes in Buoux and to the rafting and canyoning of Verdon, there’s something for every thrill-seeker. The region’s varied terrain also provides excellent opportunities for mountain biking and paragliding, ensuring an unforgettable active holiday experience.

Surfing

The wild Atlantic coast of south-west France has some of the best surfing on the planet. From the powerful beachbreaks of Hossegor and Capbreton in the Landes to the reef and point breaks of the Basque Country, there’s a wave for every level. Brittany offers a cooler, quieter alternative with consistent swell and uncrowded lineups.
On the Mediterranean side, kitesurfing thrives wherever the Mistral and Tramontane winds blow. The lagoons of Leucate, the Camargue beaches, and the coastline around Montpellier are among the best kitesurf spots in the south of France — flat water, side-shore winds, and 300 days of sunshine a year.
