It’s on! One month after the first attempt to run the comp, the Rip Curl Challenge La Nord takes place today, Wednesday 07 January 2015, at Hossegor’s famous beach break, La Nord.
55 of France’s best big wave surfers including Benjamin Sanchis, Eric Rebiere, Gautier Garanx, Francois Gouffran, Stephane Irralour and Micky Picon will come together to put on a show in 3-4 metre waves. This year the big guns are joined by wild cards Justine Dupont, Lee-Ann Curren and Pilou Ducalme.
Event criteria
The event takes place in big waves, minimum 3 to 4 metres, with judging criteria focussed both on the size of the wave and how well the surfer surfs the wave. 5 heats of 45 minutes, each seeing 11 surfers thrash it out in La Nord’s epic waves. The best from each heat will move through to the final.
6 hours of surfing entertainment
Spectators can anticipate 6 hours of surfing entertainment with France’s best professional and amateur big-wave surfers all in one place. Surfers are rewarded for really going for it, and trophies will be awarded to the winner, the surfer of the biggest wave and whoever has the best ‘wipe-out’.
Event sponsors include Rip Curl, Monster Energy, Surf Session magazine and X-Treme Video.

I’m not sure I’m the right person to contact… There’s no set date for the event, as they wait for the best big-wave conditions the waiting period is anytime between November and April, so we just have to follow the official sponsor Rip Curl (https://www.instagram.com/ripcurl/) and wait for an announcement.
