The Closest Ski Resorts to Geneva Airport
The closest big ski resorts to Geneva airport are Le Grand-Bornand, Les Carroz and La Clusaz, each about an hour away by road. After that, Chamonix, Megève, Les Gets and Morzine take 1 h 15 – 1 h 45. So the Mont Blanc valley and the Portes du Soleil are easy trips too. Below, we rank 22 ski resorts near Geneva by transfer time: 16 in France and six in Switzerland. Each also gets an honest verdict on who it suits.
Geneva airport (GVA), in Geneva, Switzerland, sits right on the French border. That’s why the French ski resorts near Geneva are usually closer than the Swiss ones. Within two hours you can reach four big French ski areas. They are the Aravis, the Grand Massif (265 km), Évasion Mont-Blanc (445 km) and the Portes du Soleil (600 km). Then add Chamonix and its world-class off-piste, and few airports have this much skiing on the doorstep.
Two things catch first-timers out. First, the airport has a French sector as well as a Swiss side, and that changes your hire car. Second, the roads out of Geneva jam on winter Saturdays. On February Saturdays, the Autoroute Blanche carries more than 80,000 vehicles, three times its normal traffic. Every time on this page is a typical private transfer in good conditions, so allow an extra hour on Saturdays.

Best Ski Resorts Near Geneva by Type
Not sure where to start? Pick the row that fits your group. Every resort linked here is within 2 h 30 of Geneva airport. The links take you to our full resort guides.
Closest to the Airport
Our pick is La Clusaz, a real Aravis village with 125 km of pistes, 1 h – 1 h 15 away. Similarly, Le Grand-Bornand and Les Carroz are just as quick. Les Houches, Megève and Chamonix take 1 h 15 – 1 h 30. So you can be on the Mont Blanc slopes by lunchtime.
Beginners & Families
Les Gets is our top family pick, with wide, tree-lined blues and a 1 h 15 – 1 h 30 transfer. La Clusaz and Les Houches have gentle beginner zones, and Châtel’s snowpark is one of the most accessible in the Alps. Le Grand-Bornand, Samoëns 1600 and Les Saisies are excellent for first-timers too.
Big Linked Ski Areas
Morzine, Avoriaz and Les Gets plug you into the Portes du Soleil, 600 km across the French–Swiss border. Megève is the hub of Évasion Mont-Blanc (445 km). The Grand Massif (265 km), from Flaine, Les Carroz and Samoëns, is the best big area on a short transfer. Above all, they suit mixed-ability groups.
Snow-Sure & High Altitude
Avoriaz has the highest village within two hours of Geneva, at 1,800 m, and Chamonix’s Grands Montets reach 2,765 m. Flaine and Les Contamines are the snow-sure picks in the Grand Massif and Mont Blanc country. For the highest skiing near Geneva, though, cross into Switzerland. Glacier 3000 opens in early November, and Verbier tops out at 3,330 m.
Off-Piste & Freeride
Chamonix is the obvious pick, with the Vallée Blanche and the Grands Montets 1 h 15 – 1 h 30 from Geneva. Avoriaz has easy-access off-piste, La Clusaz has the Balme combes, and Arêches-Beaufort is a ski-touring hotspot. Meanwhile, in Switzerland, Verbier’s Mont-Fort is legendary. Hire a guide (see our off-piste skiing guide) and check that your travel insurance covers off-piste.
Village Charm & Après
Megève is the chic one, with a car-free medieval centre and excellent mountain restaurants. Chamonix is a real town with the liveliest nightlife. Morzine has the biggest British chalet and après scene in the Portes du Soleil, and La Clusaz is a working farming village. Groups and stag weekends do best in Morzine or Chamonix.
Day Trips & No Car Needed
Chamonix is the easiest car-free trip: FlixBus runs from Geneva several times a day, and the train takes about three hours. Les Houches is also on the same Mont-Blanc Express line. In Switzerland, direct trains run from the airport to Aigle (about 1 h 30), with a bus up to Villars. Others reach Sierre for Crans-Montana and Visp for Zermatt.
Best Value
Arêches-Beaufort has one of the cheapest passes in the French Alps (€41 a day). Châtel’s Espace Liberté pass drops to €44 on Saturdays. In addition, La Clusaz sells day passes online from €29.90 if you book ahead. Closer to Geneva, Praz de Lys–Sommand (€37.50 a day) and Monts Jura (€38) are the bargains.

Ski Resorts Within About an Hour of Geneva
Only the small Jura areas are truly under an hour from Geneva airport. The three closest big resorts are Le Grand-Bornand, Les Carroz and La Clusaz, at 1 h – 1 h 15 in good conditions. So they’re the best ski resorts near Geneva for a weekend or a day trip.
Le Grand-Bornand
From Geneva: 56 km / 1 h – 1 h 15.
Ski area: Le Grand-Bornand, 90 km (on the Aravis pass with La Clusaz, linked by ski bus, not by lift).
Altitude: 1,000 – 2,100 m.
Best for: Beginners, families, snowpark.
Snow-sure: 2/5.
Le Grand-Bornand is the Aravis’s other big resort, and just as quick to reach, at 56 km by road. It’s a traditional farming village with 90 km of pistes above the village and Chinaillon. Three beginner areas and a snowpark the resort rates among France’s top 10 make it a superb family choice. The catch is altitude. The top lift is only 2,100 m, so it leans on its 300 snow cannons in a lean winter. You can’t ski across to La Clusaz either; a ski bus links the two.
Les Carroz
From Geneva: 65 km / 1 h – 1 h 15.
Ski area: Grand Massif, 265 km (linked with Flaine, Samoëns and Morillon).
Altitude: 1,140 – 2,480 m.
Best for: A big ski area on a short transfer.
Snow-sure: 3/5.
Les Carroz is the quickest way into the Grand Massif, 265 km of linked skiing shared with Flaine, Samoëns and Morillon. The village sits low at 1,140 m, but the Kédeuze gondola lifts you straight into the slopes. Better still, 80% of the Grand Massif faces north, which keeps the snow cold. It’s a lived-in village rather than a purpose-built station, with a relaxed, family feel. The weak spot is the run home: in a warm spell, the lower slopes back to the village turn slushy.
La Clusaz
From Geneva: 59 km / 1 h – 1 h 15.
Ski area: La Clusaz–Manigod, 125 km (Aravis pass with Le Grand-Bornand, linked by ski bus).
Altitude: 1,040 – c. 2,480 m.
Best for: Shortest Geneva transfer, village charm.
Snow-sure: 3/5.
Get away from the crowds in an unspoilt French mountain town, about 60 km by road from Geneva airport. La Clusaz’s 125 km spread across five massifs, so there’s plenty for beginners. Scratch the surface, though, and you’ll find good tree runs and kickers. The new Col de Balme chairlift (2026) serves the high, north-facing combes that hold the best snow. The downsides? The village sits at 1,040 m and the lower slopes are sunny. The Aravis pass to Le Grand-Bornand also needs a bus. Look out for local legend Candide Thovex on powder days.
The Small Ski Areas Closest to Geneva
If you just want a few hours on snow, the Jura is closer than any Alpine resort. Monts Jura’s Crozet gondola is just 30 – 45 min from the airport. Mijoux-La Faucille is as close, while Lélex takes 1 h – 1 h 15. Together they have about 35 km of pistes up to 1,680 m and a €38 day pass. They run from 19 Dec 2026 until 29 Mar 2027. Jura sur Léman, at Les Rousses and La Dôle (1,677 m), opens on 5 Dec 2026. It’s 45 min – 1 h away.
These are low, small areas that need a good snowfall, so think of them as half-day options rather than holidays. And skip Mont Salève: its cable car is for sightseeing, and its one volunteer-run drag lift is currently listed as closed.
1 to 1½ Hours: Mont Blanc, Grand Massif & Portes du Soleil
This is the sweet spot. Within 1 h 15 – 1 h 45 of Geneva airport you reach the Chamonix valley and three big linked areas. Évasion Mont-Blanc, the Grand Massif and the Portes du Soleil have more than 1,300 km of pistes between them.
Saint-Gervais
From Geneva: 77 km / 1 h 15 – 1 h 30.
Ski area: Évasion Mont-Blanc, 445 km (via Le Bettex), plus the Prarion side linked to Les Houches.
Altitude: 850 – 2,350 m.
Best for: Train access, Évasion Mont-Blanc cruising.
Snow-sure: 2/5.
Saint-Gervais is an underrated base, and the easiest French resort to reach by train: the Léman Express runs to Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet. From the old spa town, gondolas climb to Le Bettex and the Mont d’Arbois slopes it shares with Megève. They’re part of the 445 km Évasion Mont-Blanc. Meanwhile, across the valley, the Prarion side links to Les Houches. The village is low at 850 m, though. So the best snow is high up, and on a poor-snow day you’ll ride the gondola both ways.
Samoëns
From Geneva: 67 km / 1 h 15 – 1 h 30.
Ski area: Grand Massif, 265 km (via the Grand Massif Express gondola).
Altitude: c. 700 – 2,480 m.
Best for: Beginners, a real village.
Snow-sure: 3/5.
Samoëns is the prettiest village in the Grand Massif, a stone-built town on the valley floor at around 700 m. The Grand Massif Express gondola lifts you to Samoëns 1600, one of the largest beginner areas in France. After that, the full 265 km is yours. So it’s ideal for families who want a real village and a big ski area. The trade-off is that every day starts and ends with the gondola, and parking at its base costs €7 a day.
Les Gets
From Geneva: 69 km / 1 h 15 – 1 h 30.
Ski area: Portes du Soleil, 600 km (120 km Les Gets–Morzine).
Altitude: 1,172 – 2,002 m.
Best for: Families, short transfer.
Snow-sure: 2/5.
Les Gets is the family pick of the Portes du Soleil, and the quickest way into its 600 km. The local slopes are wide, tree-lined blues and reds with views across to Mont Blanc. What’s more, from the village you can ski across to Morzine, Avoriaz and on into Switzerland. The catch is altitude: nothing here goes above 2,002 m, so snow can be thin early and late in the season. The Taninges road also jams on Saturdays. In summer, the same slopes become one of the best mountain biking destinations in the Alps.
Les Houches
From Geneva: 84 km / 1 h 15 – 1 h 30.
Ski area: Les Houches–Saint-Gervais, 55 km (not on Chamonix’s Le Pass).
Altitude: 1,000 – 1,900 m.
Best for: Beginners, families, tree skiing.
Snow-sure: 2/5.
Les Houches is the first resort you reach in the Chamonix valley, and the gentlest. It has wide pistes, a Ski Camp fun zone on the Prarion and some fantastic tree skiing. That comes into its own in a storm, when Chamonix’s high lifts shut. But the top is only 1,900 m, and it isn’t linked to Chamonix’s other areas. Chamonix’s Le Pass doesn’t cover it either, so you’ll need the Mont-Blanc Unlimited pass to ski both.
Megève
From Geneva: 79 km / 1 h 15 – 1 h 30.
Ski area: Évasion Mont-Blanc, 445 km.
Altitude: 1,113 – 2,350 m.
Best for: Village charm, mountain restaurants.
Snow-sure: 2/5.
Megève is the smart one: a car-free medieval centre, a chic atmosphere and some excellent mountain restaurants. It’s the hub of Évasion Mont-Blanc, 445 km of mostly gentle, tree-lined skiing with Mont Blanc views. That makes it perfect for intermediates and mixed groups, and the pistes stay uncrowded. The downside is altitude. The village is at 1,113 m and the top is 2,350 m. So snow cover can be thin before mid-January or after mid-March.
Praz de Lys–Sommand
From Geneva: 62 km / 1 h 15 – 1 h 30.
Ski area: Praz de Lys–Sommand, 72 km (plus 60 km of cross-country).
Altitude: 1,240 – 1,966 m.
Best for: Value, quiet family skiing.
Snow-sure: 2/5.
Praz de Lys–Sommand is the local secret on our list. It’s a snowy plateau above Taninges with 72 km of pistes and a €37.50 day pass. It’s built for quiet family days, with easy blues and 60 km of cross-country trails, and it’s on the Magic Pass. It’s great for a long weekend, but there’s limited scope for a week. The top is only 1,966 m, the vertical is 726 m, and there’s no airport coach, so you’ll either need a private transfer or hire a car.

Chamonix
From Geneva: 91 km / 1 h 15 – 1 h 30.
Ski area: Chamonix valley, 169 km in 4 unlinked areas.
Altitude: 1,035 – 2,765 m (Aiguille du Midi 3,842 m, no pistes).
Best for: Off-piste, experts, a real mountain town.
Snow-sure: 4/5.
Chamonix is the reason many skiers fly to Geneva. The town sits under Mont Blanc, and its terrain is the most serious near the airport. In fact, half its pistes are rated advanced or expert. Then there’s the off-piste, from the Vallée Blanche to the Grands Montets. It’s a real town, too, with the best nightlife in the valley. Beginners should look elsewhere, though, because the four ski areas aren’t linked by piste and you’ll bus between them. In 2026/27 the Grands Montets summit stays closed, but its lifts still reach 2,765 m. Summer brings some of the best hiking in Chamonix and the Alps.
Morzine
From Geneva: 77 km / 1 h 15 – 1 h 45.
Ski area: Portes du Soleil, 600 km (120 km Morzine–Les Gets).
Altitude: 1,000 – 2,002 m.
Best for: Big linked area, après.
Snow-sure: 2/5.
Morzine is the Portes du Soleil’s real town, open year-round and home to the area’s biggest British chalet and après scene. The Pleney gondola takes you into the Morzine–Les Gets slopes. Meanwhile, the Super Morzine gondola connects you to Avoriaz and the rest of the 600 km. As a result, it’s a great base for mixed-ability groups. The weak spot is the 1,000 m village, where lower runs turn to slush by March. Saturday transfers often take 1 h 45 or more, too. Come back in summer for the mountain biking in Morzine.
Flaine
From Geneva: 80 km / 1 h 15 – 1 h 45.
Ski area: Grand Massif, 265 km.
Altitude: 1,600 – 2,480 m.
Best for: Snow-sure Grand Massif, ski-in/ski-out.
Snow-sure: 4/5.
Flaine is the snow-sure heart of the Grand Massif. Built at 1,600 m in a north-facing bowl, it holds its snow when the lower villages are struggling. The Grandes Platières gondola takes you to 2,480 m in 12 minutes, and the Combe de Gers off-piste drops 800 m. It’s ski-in/ski-out, too. However, the 1960s concrete architecture divides opinion, the climb from Cluses is winding, and the resort car parks charge €5 a day.
Les Contamines
From Geneva: 86 km / 1 h 15 – 1 h 45.
Ski area: Les Contamines–Hauteluce, 120 km (on the Évasion Mont-Blanc pass, but not ski-linked).
Altitude: 1,200 – 2,500 m.
Best for: Snow-sure, freeride, quiet slopes.
Snow-sure: 4/5.
Les Contamines Montjoie is positioned on the high ground of the Mont Blanc backcountry: a quiet, traditional village at the end of the valley. It has 120 km of pistes up to 2,500 m, shared with Hauteluce on the far side. In addition, there are plenty of north-facing reds, blacks and freeride. So it’s a smart pick when the snow is poor lower down. But it isn’t linked by ski to Megève or Saint-Gervais, so the Évasion Mont-Blanc pass only helps if you drive. The valley road is a dead end, too.
1½ to 2 Hours: Higher, Bigger & Car-Free
Push on another half hour and you reach Châtel, Avoriaz and Les Saisies. All three are ski resorts within 2 hours of Geneva in good conditions. Avoriaz is the car-free, ski-in/ski-out one, and its 1,800 m village is the highest within two hours of Geneva.
Châtel
From Geneva: 81 km / 1 h 30 – 2 h.
Ski area: Portes du Soleil, 600 km (120 km Espace Liberté).
Altitude: 1,200 – 2,200 m.
Best for: Village charm, beginner-friendly park.
Snow-sure: 3/5.
Châtel is the Portes du Soleil’s most traditional village, a farming community right on the Swiss border. It has 120 km in its own Espace Liberté and the full 600 km beyond. The Super-Châtel snowpark is one of the most accessible in the Alps, great for first freestyle laps. Free car parks at Pré-la-Joux and Linga make it a good day trip, too. On the other hand, the drive up the Abondance valley is the longest in the Portes du Soleil. There’s no airport coach, either.
Avoriaz
From Geneva: 89 km / 1 h 30 – 2 h.
Ski area: Portes du Soleil, 600 km (75 km local).
Altitude: 1,800 m village – 2,260 m.
Best for: Snowparks, ski-in/ski-out, car-free.
Snow-sure: 4/5.
Avoriaz is the highest and most snow-sure resort in the Portes du Soleil. The village sits at 1,800 m, it’s completely car-free, and nearly every apartment is ski-in/ski-out. It’s also the snowpark capital of France, with four parks including The Stash. For kids, the Village des Enfants is a great set-up. However, the catch is the arrival. Drivers park at Prodains (€26 a day in 2025/26) and ride the Prodains Express lift up. And the architecture may be the strangest in the Alps.
Les Saisies
From Geneva: 102 km / 1 h 45 – 2 h.
Ski area: Espace Diamant, 192 km.
Altitude: 1,650 m village – 2,069 m.
Best for: Families, cross-country, a good snow record.
Snow-sure: 3/5.
Les Saisies is the snow-sure surprise of Savoie: a high, open village at 1,650 m nicknamed the “grenier à neige” (snow loft). It’s the hub of the Espace Diamant, 192 km of wide, gentle pistes that suit beginners and families. It also has excellent cross-country skiing. The top is only 2,069 m, though, and steep terrain is scarce, so experts will get bored. It’s also the furthest French resort from Geneva airport on our list.
Worth the Extra Hour: The Tarentaise and Beaufortain
Beyond two hours you reach the giants: Les 3 Vallées, Paradiski and Tignes–Val d’Isère. Plenty of Geneva flyers transfer here, but be honest about the time. Chambéry airport is 45 – 60 minutes closer to almost all of them (La Rosière is the exception, at about 30 minutes), and Lyon is usually closer than Geneva too.
| Resort | From Geneva (good conditions) | Closer airport |
|---|---|---|
| Valmorel | 129 km / 2 h – 2 h 30 | Chambéry, 1 h 15 – 1 h 30 |
| Arêches-Beaufort | 122 km / 2 h – 2 h 30 | Chambéry, 1 h 15 – 1 h 30 |
| Les 3 Vallées (Méribel) | 142 km / 2 h 15 – 2 h 45 | Chambéry, 1 h 15 – 1 h 30 |
| Courchevel | 149 km / 2 h 15 – 2 h 45 | Chambéry, 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 |
| La Rosière | 144 km / 2 h 15 – 2 h 45 | Chambéry, 1 h 45 – 2 h 15 |
| La Plagne | 158 km / 2 h 30 – 3 h | Chambéry, 1 h 30 – 2 h |
| Val Thorens | 161 km / 2 h 30 – 3 h | Chambéry, 1 h 30 – 2 h |
| Les Arcs | 161 km / 2 h 30 – 3 h | Chambéry, 1 h 45 – 2 h |
| Tignes | 182 km / 2 h 45 – 3 h 30 | Chambéry, 2 h – 2 h 30 |
| Val d’Isère | 183 km / 3 h – 3 h 30 | Chambéry, 2 h – 2 h 30 |
Saturdays make it worse. The A43 and N90 up the Tarentaise run red on February Saturdays. For example, on 14 February 2026 there were 13 km of stop-start traffic near Albertville. If you’re set on the Tarentaise, fly into Chambéry, or take the Eurostar and the Travelski Night Express to the valley. For a cheaper week in a big resort, start with our ski holiday deals.
Swiss Ski Resorts Near Geneva
Switzerland is on Geneva’s doorstep, but for most skiers the French resorts are closer and cheaper. The nearest big Swiss area, Villars–Gryon–Les Diablerets, is 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 away, longer than Chamonix or the Grand Massif. The same Portes du Soleil pass also costs 11–17% more if you buy it in Switzerland, at October 2026 exchange rates.
So when is Switzerland the better call? Choose it for guaranteed snow at altitude, for travelling by train, or for Verbier’s freeride terrain. If you drive, you’ll need the CHF 40 Swiss motorway vignette; Swiss-side hire cars already have one.
Villars, Les Diablerets & Glacier 3000
From Geneva: 123 km / 1 h 30 – 1 h 45.
Ski area: Villars–Gryon–Les Diablerets, 87 km; Glacier 3000, 28 km (by bus from Les Diablerets).
Altitude: 1,224 – 2,120 m (Glacier 3000 top station 2,971 m).
Best for: Families, train access, glacier backup.
Snow-sure: 2/5 (Glacier 3000: 5/5).
By train: 2 h 10 – 2 h 25 to Villars (change at Aigle).
This is the closest big Swiss ski area to Geneva, and the easiest by train. Villars, Gryon and Les Diablerets’ Meilleret sector form one 87 km lift-linked area that suits families and relaxed intermediates. It’s low, topping out at 2,120 m. However, Glacier 3000 is a bus ride from Les Diablerets. It opens from 7 Nov 2026 to 30 Apr 2027, when most French resorts are shut. The Alpes Vaudoises 6-day pass (CHF 379, about €408) covers both.
Champéry
From Geneva: 128 km / 1 h 30 – 2 h.
Ski area: Portes du Soleil, 600 km (Swiss side).
Altitude: 1,050 – 2,277 m.
Best for: The Portes du Soleil by train.
Snow-sure: 2/5.
By train: 2 h 45 (change at Aigle).
Champéry is the Swiss gateway to the same 600 km Portes du Soleil you’d ski from Morzine. What’s more, it has a railway station. The cable car climbs to Planachaux, and the infamous Chavanette “Swiss Wall” is close by. By comparison, buying the pass in Switzerland costs CHF 383 (about €413) for 6 days, against €352–€373 in France. The village is low at 1,050 m, so skiing home needs good snow.
Verbier
From Geneva: 163 km / 2 h – 2 h 15.
Ski area: 4 Vallées, 410 km.
Altitude: 1,500 – 3,330 m.
Best for: Freeride, experts.
Snow-sure: 4/5.
By train: 2 h 40 – 2 h 50 (Le Châble + gondola).
Verbier is the one Swiss resort serious skiers cross the border for. The 4 Vallées has 410 km of runs and freeride routes. Above all, Mont-Fort (3,330 m) and Mont Gelé hold some of the best lift-served off-piste in the Alps. Its 4 Vallées pass is one of the priciest on this page, at CHF 409 (about €441) for 6 days. Buy online 10 days ahead for 10% off. Trains from Geneva airport reach Le Châble, where a gondola takes you up to the village.
Gstaad
From Geneva: 151 km / 2 h – 2 h 30.
Ski area: Gstaad Mountain Rides, about 200 km in sectors linked by bus.
Altitude: 1,050 – 2,011 m (Glacier 3000 on multi-day passes).
Best for: A chic village, a scenic train.
Snow-sure: 2/5.
By train: About 3 h 05 (change at Montreux).
Gstaad is more about the village than the skiing: chalets, designer shops and the GoldenPass train from Montreux. Its 200 km are spread across separate, low sectors linked by bus, so it suits cruisers rather than mileage-hunters. However, multi-day passes include Glacier 3000, which rescues a poor snow week. A flexible 6-day pass costs CHF 504 (about €543).
Crans-Montana
From Geneva: 183 km / 2 h 15 – 2 h 45.
Ski area: Crans-Montana, 140 km.
Altitude: 1,500 – 2,927 m.
Best for: Sunshine, intermediates, a glacier.
Snow-sure: 3/5.
By train: About 2 h 50 (Sierre + funicular).
Crans-Montana is a sunny, south-facing plateau above the Rhône valley. It has 140 km of mostly intermediate runs and a glacier at Plaine Morte (2,927 m). It hosts the FIS Alpine World Ski Championships from 1 to 14 February 2027. So expect race-piste closures and higher prices that fortnight. The 2026/27 lift prices aren’t out yet. In 2025/26, a high-season 6-day pass was CHF 414 (about €446).
Zermatt
From Geneva: 232 km / 2 h 45 – 3 h 15 to Täsch, then a 12-minute shuttle train.
Ski area: Matterhorn Ski Paradise, 360 km (with Cervinia).
Altitude: 1,620 – 3,883 m.
Best for: Guaranteed snow, the Matterhorn.
Snow-sure: 5/5.
By train: 3 h 50 – 4 h (change at Visp).
Zermatt is the furthest resort on our list, but it’s the one place near Geneva where snow is all but guaranteed. The glacier lifts reach 3,883 m, and the season runs from 1 Nov 2026 to 3 May 2027. The village is car-free, so drivers park at Täsch and take the shuttle train. Most people simply take the train from Geneva airport instead. Passes are dynamic, from CHF 384 (about €414) for 6 days on the cheapest dates.
Italy: Courmayeur and La Thuile
Italy is closer than you might think. Through the Mont Blanc Tunnel, Courmayeur is 1 h 30 – 1 h 45 from Geneva airport (102 km). It has about 100 km of skiing up to 2,755 m, and the Skyway Monte Bianco cable car rises to 3,466 m. La Thuile is 2 h – 2 h 15 away (123 km), and it shares the 156 km Espace San Bernardo with La Rosière. The tunnel costs €55.50 one way or €69.20 return for a car in 2026. No long closure is planned for winter 2026/27.
Ski Resorts Near Geneva Map
The map below pins every resort on this page and Geneva airport. Zoom in to see which valley each one sits in. The A40 runs up the Arve valley to Chamonix, the Grand Massif and the Portes du Soleil. The A41 serves the Aravis, while the Swiss resorts line the Rhône valley.
Getting From Geneva Airport to the Ski Resorts
Geneva airport has two sides. UK flights land on the Swiss side, where you’ll find the transfer meeting points, the airport coaches and most hire-car desks. The French sector, reached from the check-in level, mainly matters if you hire a car. You don’t need it to reach French resorts. Transfers leave from the Swiss side, and the quickest drive to Haute-Savoie crosses Geneva either way.
Geneva Airport Transfer Times
Times below are good-conditions transfers from the Swiss side. On February Saturdays, though, the A40 Autoroute Blanche carries three times its usual traffic. One operator quotes Geneva to Les Gets at 1 h 45 or more on a Saturday, against under 75 minutes midweek. So our peak Saturday column adds an hour.

Private & Shared Transfers
A transfer is the stress-free option, and the driver deals with the snow chains. Shared seats to Morzine, Les Gets or Chamonix start at around £15–£32 per person each way. A private minibus for up to eight costs from about £155–£180 to Morzine, Les Gets, Chamonix, La Clusaz or Flaine. Saturdays cost more, and on a shared run you may wait for other flights.
We use airport transfers from our partner Ski-Lifts. They meet you on the Swiss side of arrivals, between the Brezelkönig café and the UBS bank.
Book a Geneva Airport Transfer
Ski-Lifts runs private and shared transfers from Geneva airport to most of the French resorts on this page. That includes Chamonix, Morzine, Les Gets, La Clusaz and Flaine.
Private minibuses for up to eight start at about £155–£180. Book early for February and the Christmas holidays, when Saturday slots sell out.
Hiring a Car
A car makes sense for day trips, for resorts without an airport coach and for groups splitting costs. However, even off a UK flight you can collect a French-registered car. Clear Swiss customs, go up to the check-in level and follow the “France Sector” signs. The French-side desks close early, though, between 21:00 and 22:30.
Winter equipment is the big difference. French-side cars usually come without winter tyres. Yet from 1 November to 31 March, French mountain law requires winter tyres, or chains in the car, in Haute-Savoie and Savoie. So book them with the car. Swiss-side cars include winter tyres and the CHF 40 motorway vignette, but most firms charge a fee to take them into France.
The French sector exits at Ferney-Voltaire, on the far side of Geneva from the Alps. So the quickest route to Haute-Savoie still crosses the city, on roads that need no vignette. In Switzerland there’s no legal requirement for winter tyres, but if you crash on summer tyres you can be held liable. Compare prices on our car hire in France page or on DiscoverCars.
By Train & Bus
Geneva airport has its own station under the terminal, 7 minutes from Geneva Cornavin. For the French resorts, change at Cornavin onto the Léman Express, which runs to Annemasse, La Roche-sur-Foron, Cluses and Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet. From Le Fayet, the Mont-Blanc Express climbs to Les Houches and Chamonix, about 3 hours from the airport with three changes.
Swiss resorts are easier. Direct trains run from the airport to Aigle (about 1 h 30) for Villars, Les Diablerets and Champéry. Others go to Sierre (2 h 15) for Crans-Montana and to Visp (2 h 30) for Zermatt.
Otherwise, coaches fill the gaps. FlixBus runs about nine buses a day from Geneva to Chamonix, from around €12. Eurobus serves Morzine, Les Gets and Avoriaz, plus Les Carroz and Flaine at weekends, and the Alpskibus runs to the Tarentaise. Most 2026/27 coach timetables are published from mid-October, so check before you book.
Day Trips From Geneva
Living in Geneva, or adding a ski day to a city break? The best day trips are La Clusaz, Le Grand-Bornand, Les Carroz, Flaine, Les Gets and Chamonix. All are 1 h – 1 h 45 away in good conditions. Leave by 7:30 and you’ll be on the lifts around 9:00. Several resorts have free car parks, including Chamonix’s Grands Montets, Châtel’s Pré-la-Joux and Linga, and Morzine’s Nyon. Buy your pass online the day before: it’s usually cheaper, and you skip the queue.
Don’t fancy driving? In 2025/26, Geneva’s bus station (Gare Routière, Place Dorcière) ran day-trip buses with a lift pass included. They cost CHF 75 for La Clusaz, Flaine or Avoriaz and CHF 85 for Chamonix. Avoid Sunday evenings if you can, because the A40 back to Geneva is at its busiest from 16:00 to 20:00. And hire your skis in resort with Skiset ski rental; code ULTIMATEFRANCE10 takes 10% off when you book with Skiset.
When to Ski Near Geneva
For snow, crowds and price, mid-January and March are the best times to ski near Geneva. The worst week of 2026/27 is 13–21 February 2027. That’s when UK half-term, Geneva’s February school week (15–19 Feb) and two French holiday zones all overlap. Vaud’s ski week (6–14 Feb) and the Christmas holidays are busy too. Geneva Airport handled a record 79,700 passengers on Saturday 3 January 2026.
Local skiers also fill the closest resorts at weekends, so ski the Aravis and the Jura midweek if you can. Meanwhile, early and late in the season, altitude matters. Zermatt opens on 1 November 2026 and Glacier 3000 on 7 November, while Flaine opens on 5 December. In April, stick to high terrain: Flaine (to 18 April), Glacier 3000 (to 30 April) and Zermatt (to 3 May 2027). Most lower Haute-Savoie resorts close between 4 and 11 April.

Ski Resorts Near Geneva FAQ
The closest major ski resorts to Geneva airport are Le Grand-Bornand, Les Carroz and La Clusaz. Each is 1 h – 1 h 15 by road in good conditions. For the closest skiing of any kind, Monts Jura’s Crozet gondola is just 30–45 minutes from the airport. But it’s a small, low area, with about 35 km of pistes across Monts Jura.
Only the small Jura areas are reliably under an hour. Monts Jura (Crozet and Mijoux-La Faucille) is 30–45 minutes away, and Jura sur Léman (Les Rousses and La Dôle) 45 minutes to an hour. The closest big resorts, Le Grand-Bornand, Les Carroz and La Clusaz, take 1 h – 1 h 15. So they work for a weekend or even a day trip.
Yes. Geneva airport has its own station. For France, change at Geneva Cornavin onto the Léman Express to Cluses or Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet. Then take a bus or the Mont-Blanc Express; Chamonix takes about 3 hours. Swiss resorts are easier, with direct trains to Aigle (for Villars and Champéry), Sierre (for Crans-Montana) and Visp (for Zermatt).
Yes. La Clusaz, Le Grand-Bornand, Les Carroz, Flaine, Les Gets and Chamonix are all 1 h – 1 h 45 away in good conditions. Several have free car parks, too. Leave by 7:30, buy your pass online and you’ll be on the lifts by about 9:00. In 2025/26, Geneva’s bus station also ran day-trip buses with a lift pass included.
Les Gets is our top family pick, with wide, gentle pistes and a 1 h 15 – 1 h 30 transfer. Le Grand-Bornand, La Clusaz, Samoëns 1600 and Les Saisies are also excellent for first-timers. Avoriaz has the Village des Enfants and ski-in/ski-out apartments, while Châtel’s snowpark is ideal for budding freestylers.
For the highest ski resorts near Geneva, go to Switzerland. Zermatt’s lifts reach 3,883 m, and Glacier 3000 (2,971 m) opens in early November. Within two hours, Avoriaz has the highest French village (1,800 m), and Chamonix’s Grands Montets reach 2,765 m. Flaine and Les Contamines also hold their snow well, while lower resorts like Megève and Les Gets can struggle in a warm spell.
For most skiers, France. The French resorts are closer, the linked areas are bigger and the lift passes are cheaper. A Portes du Soleil 6-day pass costs €352–€373 in France but CHF 383 (about €413) in Switzerland. The nearest big Swiss area, Villars, takes 1 h 30 – 1 h 45. Switzerland wins for glacier snow, train access and Verbier’s freeride.
You don’t need a car, because transfers, coaches and trains cover most resorts. If you drive in the French Alps, the law requires winter tyres, or chains in the car, from 1 November to 31 March. French-side hire cars often come without them, so book them in advance. Swiss-side cars include winter tyres and the CHF 40 motorway vignette.
The Portes du Soleil, with 600 km of pistes across France and Switzerland, is the biggest ski area within two hours of Geneva. You can join it from Les Gets or Morzine (1 h 15 – 1 h 45) or from Châtel or Avoriaz (1 h 30 – 2 h). Champéry is the Swiss gateway. Évasion Mont-Blanc (445 km) comes next. Beyond two hours, Les 3 Vallées (600 km) matches it.
Bad in February. On peak Saturdays the A40 Autoroute Blanche carries more than 80,000 vehicles, three times its normal traffic. One operator quotes Geneva to Les Gets at 1 h 45 or more on a Saturday, against under 75 minutes midweek. So allow an extra hour, avoid 10:00–16:00 if you can, or fly on a Sunday or midweek.
Praz de Lys–Sommand (€37.50 a day) and Monts Jura (€38 a day) are two of the cheapest ski areas near Geneva. For a bigger resort on a budget, Arêches-Beaufort’s day pass is €41, and Châtel’s Espace Liberté pass drops to €44 on Saturdays. Buying online in advance saves money at most resorts.
